Tree removal

Tree felling, Saint-Eustache

Cutting down a tree is an act that usually falls under municipal regulations. You can't just cut down a tree for any reason. Your municipality must agree to it, and very often a permit is required.

In the meantime, you probably want to know when you should cut a tree. This page presents two types of reasons and the questions that arise in each to make a good decision.

Security aspects

The first reason to cut down a tree is because it poses a risk of causing damage.

For example, a storm rages and throws your tree off balance. It could also be attacked by an insect or affected by a disease and you wonder if it would be better to cut down your tree in case it becomes weak and dangerous or that the disease could spread to other trees in the neighborhood. The difficulty in such cases is to demonstrate the risk. This may require an assessment of the situation, such as by a certified arborist.

If the specimen is dead, it is imperative to remove it. Insects or fungi could invade, and the entire tree or sections of it could dry out or rot and fall over without warning.

Deciding whether or not to cut down a diseased tree requires a diagnosis. Is it really a disease? What is the degree of damage? Is it incurable or curable? What is the risk of propagation to other plants in the neighborhood? Are there any regulations concerning this tree species? These are all questions that will help determine if it is appropriate or even necessary to cut down the tree. The advice of an arborist can be valuable in these cases.

Severe weather, regardless of the season, can cause serious damage to trees. Even if they have not fallen, it may be advisable to examine them to determine if steps should be taken to correct the damage, such as pruning or bracing. If not, should they be cut down?

An uprooted tree that is still standing should be felled almost every time, as its anchorage to the ground will remain fragile.

A poorly situated tree can be cut down for a reason. This reason must be acceptable to the municipal regulations. Nevertheless, it is preferable to avoid cutting when possible. In such cases, it is also advisable to consult us to determine if there are alternatives.

A tree becomes an obstacle

The second reason to cut down is when your specimen becomes a nuisance.

It is possible that too many trees in close proximity are fighting for access to water and nutrients and that at least one of them is not able to grow properly. When various specimens are competing with each other because their branches have become entwined as they grow or because they are sharing insufficient resources for all, the knowledgeable recommendations of our professional arborists can inform the decision making process and help determine how many and which specimens to cut down if necessary.

A tree may also impede access to important maintenance equipment, encroach on a street or bicycle lane, or prevent the completion of work authorized by your municipality.

When the request to cut down a tree comes from a public authority or when construction or renovation work, among others, has been authorized, the need to cut down a tree is not too difficult to demonstrate. In other cases, you will have to decide between simple preference and necessity. A photo may suffice, or an arborist can help you determine this. Even if Hydro-Quebec is in charge of maintenance near power lines, their responsibility is generally limited to medium or high voltage wiring. Low voltage wiring is usually your responsibility.

You can't cut down a tree just because it's disturbing

Indeed, even if you have allergies and flowering tree species are causing you pain and preventing you from sleeping well, this reason is not admissible. Even if you only want to remove this huge shadow from a part of your property and the only way to do so is to cut down this tree. On the other hand, we may have an acceptable alternative to propose to you.

Cutting down a tree yourself or having it done?

You may be thinking of cutting down your tree yourself. There are a number of questions to ask.

Do you have the necessary protective equipment? To protect your head, your eyes, your hands, your feet... Are your clothes appropriate? If you have resin on your pants, you may have trouble getting it off. If you have a chainsaw, is it adequate for the job you'll be doing or will it stop working?

Will you be able to identify all the hazards in and around the felling site? Will you think about all the preventive measures you need to put in place, including an adequate safety perimeter? Will you be able to choose the direction of the tree's fall and plan precautions to be taken where it will fall?

Wind strength and direction may be important. Will you be able to take this into account, as well as any slopes that may be present? If you need to clean up the trunk before cutting, will you consider this or do it properly?

Will you be able to determine whether it is better to cut from the foot or in sections? Will you need cabling? Will the cut you make allow the tree to fall in the intended direction? Will you be able to analyze the condition of your tree to identify any tree conditions that may pose a risk during felling? Will you react correctly, for example by stepping aside at the right moment, if the tree bounces during the fall?

A query in a search engine with the words "tree felling accidents", then a selection of the "News" tab and you will see a list of regrettable events related to tree felling. This operation is really dangerous. Moreover, tree care services like ours have insurance coverage for liability for unfortunate cases that may occur, even if they are rare.
